Kelly wants Bishop back

Mike Kelly wants Michael Bishop at Bomber training camp next June, and he admitted that not bringing a veteran quarterback to camp this year was an error in judgment.

"Obviously I made a mistake this year in not having one more veteran presence to help groom a younger guy," the head coach said. "Michael Bishop came in under some of the most adverse circumstances that anybody could ever come in.

"He went 6-8 for us, had some outstanding games and had some not-so outstanding games. The way he handled himself in the face of adversity should be commended on all levels, whether it was on the field or off the field.

"I'm a Michael Bishop fan."

Bishop, 33, completed just 50.5% of his passes and threw 15 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. The Kansas State product, who joined the Bombers in late July after Stefan LeFors struggled out of the gate, wants another shot, but with a full training camp.

"You do want to come back after the way you go out," he said. "After all the things we went through this season, you want to go out and get a fresh start once again with the guys.

"If the opportunity's there, I'll take it. If not, I'll move on."

Kelly noted the obvious, that the offence was the team's albatross this season, and said he will do everything in his power to fix it. He better do it quick, because the Bombers extended their CFL-worst Grey Cup drought to 19 years yesterday.

"We need to re-assess, re-evaluate, re-design a few things and address a couple of personnel spots," Kelly said. "We'll get it right. There's too many good people in this room not for them to succeed."

Kelly handed over the playcalling duties to running backs coach Manny Matsakis midway through the season. Matsakis told the Sun on Friday he expects to officially become the offensive co-ordinator in the off-season.

Kelly said LeFors, "as of right now," will be in camp next year. Kelly also likes backups Casey Bramlet, Ricky Santos and Adam DiMichele.
