Asper to unveil stadium plan

David Asper's business strategy to drive his Winnipeg Blue Bombers stadium plan to completion will see many more of its details unveiled today.

Asper, executive vice-president of Canwest Global Communications Corp., will roll out drawings and details of a retail complex that he plans to develop at the site of Canad Inns Stadium to pull in revenue which will finance construction of the $135-million facility at the University of Manitoba.

No information was revealed yesterday, while Asper didn't make himself available for comment.

"This one's under lock and key," Ken Hildahl, chairman of the CFL team, said of the effort to keep details under wraps until today.

Despite Asper saying recently that the recession has been an obstacle to finalizing plans for the retail development, Hildahl said the new stadium project "absolutely" remains on track.

"Everybody remains extremely committed to the project," he said. "I don't see that changing."

The retail component is to take shape once Canad Inns Stadium is demolished and after Asper has purchased that site from the city.

Under the plan, Asper would take ownership of the traditionally community-owned franchise.
