Bombers also interested in Rogers

It turns out that Adam (Pacman) Jones is not the only ex-NFL player with a checkered past that has drawn Winnipeg's interest.

Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly has confirmed that former Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers is also on the club's negotiation list.

"We don't talk about neg list players," Kelly said yesterday. "He's certainly a talented athlete who's a big target and who has been a productive player."

Rogers was jailed in March for violating his probation after being suspended for substance abuse.

"There's a lot of players on neg lists that have had somewhat difficult backgrounds," Kelly said. "We here in Winnipeg can't understand those different backgrounds because we live in a different environment."

Yet, the Bombers released wide receiver/kicker returner Jason Armstead after he experienced legal woes last winter. Armstead recently signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and could play against the Bombers in the Labour Day Classic in Regina this Sunday.

SORRY: The B.C. Lions have apologized to the Bombers and actually fined themselves for making an offensive gesture towards the Winnipeg bench prior to the start of a CFL game in Vancouver last month, The Canadian Press reported.

Following the player introductions prior to Winnipeg's 37-10 win, Lions players gathered at centre field and made a rude chopping gesture towards the Bombers bench.

The CFL announced the Lions' have publicly acknowledged this behaviour was "embarrassing" and should not be tolerated. The amount of the fine was not known but the proceeds will be used to allow many underprivileged Vancouver youth to attend an upcoming CFL game.

CFL commissioner Mark Cohon commended the Lions for the move.

HASHMARKS: Although SB Terrence Edwards (turf toe) sat out yesterday's practice, Kelly expects him to play Sunday ... LB Barrin Simpson did practise despite also suffering from turf toe ... Although Siddeeq Shabazz is still "a little gimpy," Kelly also expects him to play, he is just not sure whether it will be at LB or S ... Kelly has yet to decide how he will replace injured DE on the front four but has lots of options with some impressive Canadian depth.
