Last night at Canad Inns Stadium
TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER
In a game where just about every Blue Bomber made a significant contribution on offence, Winnipeg slotback Terrence Edwards stood out. He not only had two touchdown grabs but made a highlight-reel reception in the third quarter. Edwards finished with three receptions for 40 yards and the two TDs. Honourable mention to tailback Fred Reid, who rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries.
TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Winnipeg linebacker Siddeeq Shabazz recorded six defensive tackles and made the play of the game (below). He also had some crushing blows and was around the ball most of the game. Honourable mention to middle linebacker Barrin Simpson, who had seven defensive tackles.
TOP SPECIAL TEAMER
Backup Winnipeg safety Shawn Gallant was outstanding covering kicks. He had two special teams tackles and was a force downfield on every kick. He also had the Smack of the Match (below).
Calgary was threatening to make a game of it by scoring to pull within 28-18 of the Bombers about midway through the fourth quarter, then stopped the Bomber offence quickly. But, on the very next series, Winnipeg linebacker Siddeeq Shabazz picked off a Henry Burris pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown that not only put the game away but chased Burris.
SMACK OF THE MATCH
It came early, in the first quarter to be exact. But Bomber special teamer Shawn Gallant simply knocked Calgary cornerback Brandon Browner silly with a devastating block on a punt return. Although Browner was slow to get up, he somehow remained in the ball game.
Winnipeg slotback Terrence Edwards made a shoe-top grab of a Stefan LeFors pass for 20 yards on second-and-20 that had the crowd oohing and ahhing.
