WINNIPEG -- Intentionally or not, the CFL schedule maker got it right when he had the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visiting the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 1.

More than a dozen players will be meeting their former team, but the one everybody will be watching is Bombers quarterback Stefan LeFors.

"When the schedule first came out that was the one I circled right there," LeFors said. "In Commonwealth. Opening day. It's going to be fun going back there, seeing a lot of familiar faces.

"It's going to be a blast stepping out in between the white lines and getting it going on that first play. It's going to be important for us to get out there and make a statement early."

LeFors is the new starting quarterback in Winnipeg, following in the footsteps of Kerwin Bell, Khari Jones and Kevin Glenn as the team's No. 1 pivots this decade.

The former University of Louisville passer spent the past two seasons in Edmonton behind Ricky Ray, getting five starts two years ago when the latter suffered a shoulder injury. LeFors was 0-5 in those starts.

Now the 28-year-old is a starter for the first time as a pro. Head coach Mike Kelly, who spent last season with LeFors in Edmonton as the team's receivers coach, is a big believer in his quarterback's talents. However, there are plenty of skeptics due to LeFors' lack of experience.

Those doubters will play a role in driving the left-handed Louisiana native to succeed.

"Obviously I want to do the team proud and the coaches and staff and myself and my family and everybody back home that's rooting me on and for all these fans."
