Day 15

STAR OF THE DAY

Running back Joe Smith stood out during yesterday morning's one and only workout in the hot, muggy weather. He carried the ball well and made some nice grabs out of the backfield.

CATCH OF THE DAY

There wasn't much team work yesterday, but sophomore receiver Aaron Hargreaves showed off his deceptive speed in one-on-ones when he blew past a defensive back and hauled in a Richie Williams toss.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"He's a strong, strong kid mentally, and he never backed down."

-- Receiver Aaron Hargreaves, talking about kicker Alexis Serna's tumultuous rookie season in 2008. Hargreaves is Serna's new holder, taking over for the released Jamie Stoddard.

STAYIN' HOME

The 12 Bombers who won't play in tomorrow night's pre-season finale in Montreal are: CB James Johnson, LB Siddeeq Shabazz, RB Fred Reid, RB Joe Smith, DE Fred Perry, LB Pierre-Luc Labbe, OL Jean-Francois Morin-Roberge, OL Thaddeus Coleman, DE Chase Ortiz, OL Matt O'Meara, SB Brock Ralph, DT Doug Brown.

KEY COMPONENTS

Kelly wants all of his offensive linemen to play well, but he needs two in particular to be on top of their games at all times: the back-side tackle (to protect the quarterback's blind side) and the front-side guard (to protect his throwing side). With lefty Stefan LeFors at the controls, those two key cogs are right tackle Glenn January and left guard Brendon LaBatte. "Glenn January is playing very well there," Kelly said. LaBatte, meanwhile, is a potential NFLer in wait.

THE SCHEDULE

The Bombers depart this morning for Montreal, where they will play their final pre-season game tomorrow night against the Alouettes. The Bombers could make their final cuts as early as Wednesday, but the CFL's deadline for teams to get down to their 46-man active rosters is Thursday at 2 p.m..
