The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed an import kicker and an import running back, the local CFL club announced yesterday.

The kicker is Kenneth Byrd and the ball carrier, Lavarus Giles, spent part of last season with the Calgary Stampeders.

Finding a placekicker and/or punter has become a priority for the Bombers.

Byrd is a 6-foot, 171-pound New Mexico product who is a two-time semifinalist for the Lou Groza award, which is given to the top kicker in the NCAA.

He connected on 29 of 37 field goals in 31 games for New Mexico and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions in 2007.

Giles is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound Jackson State product who had 555 yards and five touchdowns on 87 carries in his senior year.

"We brought Lavarus in to see if he can open up some eyes in camp," said Bomber head coach Mike Kelly. "We're excited to watch what he can do."

The Bombers kicking was a sore point all of last season when Alexis Serna handled the place-kicking and punting duties.
