Mike Kelly is trying to rebuild the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and now he has himself a Carpenter.

Charlie Carpenter is Kelly's new offensive line coach, after Ronnie Vinklarek unexpectedly left the team to take a job in the U.S.

Carpenter, a Blue Bomber assistant with Kelly in 1992 and '93, under head coach Cal Murphy, last worked in the CFL for the Montreal Alouettes in '07.

"Charlie was always a consideration for me," Kelly said in a statement released yesterday. "I'm excited to have him back ... the last time we were together we went to back-to-back Grey Cups."

Carpenter has also worked in Toronto, B.C. and Baltimore, when it was in the CFL.

Vinklarek, who was with Kelly on Edmonton's staff last season, has taken a job with Rice University in Texas.

Alexander goes to Riders

Defensive back Donovan Alexander, a Winnipeg product who was with Montreal last season, has joined Saskatchewan in a trade. Alexander dressed in four games last year, after spending some time with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. Previously he attended the University of North Dakota.

In return, the Alouettes receive second-round picks in the next two Canadian college drafts.
