Letting the dream go

TROY WESTWOOD, FOR SUN MEDIA

What a great Grey Cup game.

The Grey Cup is the most wonderfully Canadian event of the year.

I know hockey is in our DNA, but there may well be nothing with regard to a single event that brings together the nation once a year more completely than the Grey Cup.

Big time kudos to TSN for their presentation of the game.

I thought the pre-game coverage was tremendous.

I had a strange feeling watching some of the coverage.

The first time they showed the Cup, it really hit hard that over 17 years I was unable to get the family name on it.

All players have their own dreams in winning a championship. The money would get spent. The ring? I would probably give it away.

The Westwood name on the Cup? That was the dream.

For all the hours my dad drove me around and watched me play. For all the hours my uncles spent with me teaching me and helping me with sport and life. For all the Westwoods. Interesting when you have to let a dream go.

Calgary may well have the makings of a dynasty. Their organization is solid right across the board. John Hufnagel is the real deal. Henry Burris is still improving as a quarterback.

Up and down, this is a strong team. Look for Calgary to be even stronger next year and watch for Henry Burris to become legendary.

Now that the '08 season is in the books, all attention can turn to the '09 CFL football year.

Back to optimism.

Today, your Winnipeg Blue Bombers are tied for first place.

The team will look considerably different when the '09 season kicks off. Is Milt hanging them up? Will Tom Canada ever wear a blue and gold jersey again? Who will lead the team into battle? Will Buzz and Boomer make it through another off-season?

Word has it the two birds have been at each other throats the last couple years.

Across the league questions hang over a number of the teams. Toronto's once vaunted defence is now in transition. Who will the organization choose as the head coach? Can Hamilton finally learn how to win? Will Michael Bishop be able to reach his potential as a consistent quarterback? Will the West once again dominate? Questions to be tossed around for the next six months.

One thing for sure.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be better in 2009. Start booking your Grey Cup tickets now.
