Four of five Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans feel the team would be better off in 2009 without starting quarterback Kevin Glenn.
Nearly 650 people took part in the Sun's annual You Be The Boss survey, and only 18.2% of respondents feel the Bombers should keep Glenn.
The Bombers struggled in 2008 with an 8-10 record and bowed out of the playoffs in the first round thanks to a home loss to the Edmonton Eskimos.
The second-most interesting result is the one regarding legendary slotback Milt Stegall, who struggled this season after having knee surgery in May. Only 43.5% of poll respondents want to keep Turtle Man for a 15th season and 73.1% believe he should retire, although 57.7% felt signing him to a contract extension before the season was a good move.
Glenn, who was the East Division's most outstanding player in 2007, began the season with four consecutive losses, was benched for three more and finished the campaign with a 6-9 record as a starter.
When asked who they feel should be the team's starting pivot in 2009, the poll participants gave the nod to "bringing in a new quarterback," which garnered 46.4% of the vote. Current backup Ryan Dinwiddie was next at 26.3%.
The most popular non-Bomber replacement name in the comments section was Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Casey Printers, followed by former Saskatchewan Roughriders pivot Michael Bishop.
Glenn felt the fans' wrath in other questions about him, too. Only 13.7% felt signing him to a contract extension last spring was a good idea, while a mere 8.8% believe he should remain the team's starter in 2009.
Even former head coach Doug Berry got more love than Glenn in the poll -- and he got fired four days after the season ended.
More than 400 respondents took the survey before Berry was canned Nov. 12, and nearly half of them (44.8%) wanted to keep the Massachusetts native around for a fourth season. However, only 31.7% believed he was the long-term answer at coach and only 20.9% felt signing him to a contract extension last year was a good move.
ALSO OF NOTE:
- If the Bombers could sign only one free agent this winter, the fans want it to be running back Fred Reid, who garnered 48.1% of the vote, followed by defensive back Kelly Malveaux (18.1%) and Dominic Picard (11.3%).
- Offensive co-ordinator Kit Cartwright had it the worst in the survey, as 84.3% of fans want him punted. They will get their wish.
- The majority of fans (65.8%) would be happy with a new stadium at the University of Manitoba, but only 54.1% want to hand the keys to potential new owner David Asper as soon as possible.
- One honest Saskatchewan Roughriders fan voted to punt all of Winnipeg's premier players, saying in the comments section that he wants the Bombers to remain a "subpar" team.
