Glenn feels Joseph's pain

The two quarterbacks who were up for the CFL's most outstanding player award in 2007 have now both been benched in 2008.

Toronto Argonauts head coach Don Matthews revealed yesterday that Kerry Joseph, last year's MOP, will take a seat this week in favour of backup Cody Pickett.

Bombers quarterback Kevin Glenn, who was the runner-up to Joseph in last year's MOP voting, was benched for three games earlier this season by head coach Doug Berry.

Joseph told Sun Media in July that he felt for Glenn and that the latter would be back leading his team in no time. Glenn had the same words of encouragement for Joseph yesterday.

"I do (feel for him), because I understand what he's going through personally," Glenn said. "He's a very good guy. I don't think he's ever done anything wrong to anybody, so this is just a hurdle that he has to get over, and he's going to get over it.

"Like he said that I would be back, he's going to be back."

Glenn has rebounded from his demotion by throwing seven touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 66% of his passes, and guiding the Bombers to a 2-2 record in four games since his return.

Glenn figured Matthews would have given Joseph a longer leash before sending him to the sideline.

"You would think that he would get an opportunity to perform for the coach and not just one game," he said. "But everybody has their opinions and their way of doing business, but I will say that I think Kerry Joseph will be back.

"He is the MVP of the league until somebody else wins it."

TURTLE ON 'THREE': Milt Stegall's record-setting catch from Friday night got get some serious play last night. ESPN's Chris Berman, who hosts Monday Night Football, personally called the Bombers late this afternoon to inform them that Stegall's 92-yard touchdown catch against the Toronto Argos, which broke Allen Pitts' CFL's receiving yards record, will be part of the "Fastest Three Minutes in Television" at half-time of tonight's Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game. "The Fastest Three Minutes" is normally a recap of Sunday's NFL action, but Berman, who spoke at the YMHA Dinner in June and met Stegall during his visit, has always had an affinity for the CFL.

INJURY UPDATE: Ryan Donnelly was practising at right guard with the first-team offence yesterday, since Kyle Koch is out indefinitely with a severe ankle sprain. Berry wouldn't commit to Donnelly starting in that spot on Friday night in Hamilton, however. He will also look at Matt O'Meara and Obby Khan, who is physically ready to play. The Bombers will go with the same defensive lineup against the Ticats that it went with in Friday's 39-9 win over Toronto.

NEW BLOOD: The Bombers have added a pair of defensive linemen to their practice roster. Canadian Troy Cunningham and import Dorian Smith joined the team yesterday. CFL practice rosters expanded from seven to 12 players earlier this month. Cunningham, a 26-year-old from Kingston, Ont., was a 2004 fourth-round draft pick of the B.C. Lions and played eight games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats between 2005 and 2006. Smith, a 23-year-old from Van Nuys, Calif., was cut recently by the NFL's Washington Redskins. He was a college teammate of Bomber kicker Alexis Serna's at Oregon State.

AND WE QUOTE: "Remember how we lost a football game two weeks ago to Saskatchewan and how we came back and played this past week in Toronto? Well, now you've just seen Hamilton lose a tough game in the fourth quarter. How are they going to come back and play this week? Remember how we came back? Do you think they're capable of coming back? Don't let 'em."

LATE HITS: Running back Joe Smith and linebacker Zeke Moreno will be at the Bomber Store (Canad Inns Stadium location) signing autographs tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. ... The annual Blue Lightning Social will take place Friday night in the Winnipeg Sun Centre at the Stadium. The festivities begin at 8 p.m.
