The latest potential whipping boy landed in Winnipeg yesterday.
Placekicker Warren Kean arrived in time to practise with the Blue Bombers and challenge struggling rookie import placekicker Alexis Serna.
"I've made my name through placekicking but I've been working on my punting the last little couple of years and I think I can get both done," the Toronto native said.
Edmonton's first-round pick of the 2007 draft (second overall), Kean had been designated the heir apparent to Sean Fleming until veteran kicker Noel Prefontaine was acquired in a trade with Toronto.
"For what it's worth, I think I was given a relatively fair shot," said Kean, 24. "Everyone's great there, just Pre's a hall-of-fame guy."
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Concordia product figured he'd get another CFL opportunity.
"I've been back in Hamilton kicking and catching up with friends and waiting for a chance," said Kean, who kicked a CIS-record nine field goals in one game.
YET TO DECIDE
"His field goal kicking wasn't as sharp as I would have liked to have seen it," said Bomber head coach Doug Berry. "But his punting was much better than I was led to believe."
Berry has yet to decide who'll be his kicker when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats come to town Thursday.
Serna was good on one of four field goal attempts in Winnipeg's 39-11 loss to Montreal Friday, falling to 63.6% on the season -- last in the CFL.
"The past is the past and you can't keep looking at the past, you just keep working," said Serna, 23. "I'm getting ready for Hamilton this week."
If Serna was worried about the latest challenger, it didn't show.
"I've just got to keep working to do what I've got to do and just get better each week," he said. I've just got to keep working at it and try to be perfect this week."
Serna was asked if he planned to work on his form in the same way golfers try to improve their swings.
"The best golfers don't worry about that, they just keep doing what they're doing and that's exactly what I'm going to keep on doing," he replied. "I know I'm a good kicker and I'm just going to keep what I'm doing and I just need to get it done."
Hey Alexis, even Tiger Woods works on his swing.
