Walls will need a miracle

No Walls would leave a gaping hole in the defence.

Barring an overnight miracle, Winnipeg will be missing Gavin Walls, the leading sacker in the East, when the Blue Bombers play a CFL match in Montreal tomorrow night.

"It's just a minor shoulder injury and right now, I feel real good," the import defensive end said yesterday. "It's just that we're playing it safe more than anything. They're looking at this like it's a marathon, not a sprint. So, I'll stay here and get this treatment and be ready to go next week."

Walls, 27, will miss his first game in three years -- if there is no sudden cure.

'GOING TO MISS HIM'

"It feels weird, man, just not being able to go to battle with those guys," he said. "I was looking forward to going to Montreal but hey, things happen for a reason and it is what it is."

The 6-foot-2, 232-pound Arkansas product has recorded four quarterback sacks -- tied for second overall in the CFL this season.

"Gavin's a really good defensive end in this league -- one of the better ones and we're definitely going to miss him," admitted Bombers head coach Doug Berry. "Our guys will fill in for Gavin and try to make as much happen as possible in the way that Gavin would. We'll find out this week if some guys can step up the way a couple of other guys have stepped up so far this year."

Shawn Mayne, a non-import, will likely start at defensive end with both Adrian Baird and Jerome Haywood taking some turns there in certain formations. Mayne will replace injured defensive lineman Brian Guebert (hamstring) on the roster.

ROSTER JUGGLE: In other moves, WR Derick Armstrong (knee) will return, replacing Kerry Johnson, while both WR Terrence Edwards (thigh) and SB Chris Brazzell (calf) have been declared fit enough to remain on the roster. DB Sam Young will replace Gabriel Fulbright (released) and LS Mike Mahoney will fill in for Chris Cvetkovic (elbow), Berry confirmed.

It also looks like import DB Greg Moss will draw in for Walls, with Canadian LB Dave Lowry replacing non-import LB Brad Newman.

SPECIAL ATTENTION: After a special teams horror last time out, the Bombers spent more time on that aspect at this week's practices.

"Yeah, there were a couple of errors," conceded special teams stalwart Greg Bearman. "But you can't let that get you down. You just try to build and get better and be the deciding factor in a game in a positive way, never a negative way ... We'll do fine."

HASHMARKS: CB Robert Bean had arthroscopic surgery on Monday ... Word out of Montreal is that LB Tim Strickland (hamstring) is doubtful for tomorrow with several other Alouettes on the limp ... OL Val St. Germain and his wife had a baby boy, Ashton, on Monday. St. Germain had been given permission to return to his Ottawa home for the birth ... Although NFL QB Daunte Culpepper was released yesterday, the Bombers had already removed him from their neg list so there are "no possibilities" there, said GM Brendan Taman.
