Smith has two days to get ready for Als

Onterrio Smith was back on the practice field yesterday and feeling good.

After missing two weeks of action due to a foot injury suffered on the first day of Winnipeg Blue Bombers training camp, the running back looked strong in his return.

"The foot feels good," said Smith. "I'm probably pushing at about 80, 85% right now, but I'm able to get out there and do everything, get my rhythm back, get in tune with the offence, and I'll be all right."

Smith said he will "most definitely" be ready to play Thursday when the Bombers travel to Montreal to take on the Alouettes in the pre-season finale for both teams.

PLAYING SHAPE

Smith reported to camp at least 20 pounds overweight, and the injury delayed his transformation back into playing shape.

He said he doesn't know how much weight he's lost but added, "I'm just going off the compliments I'm getting."

In a more serious tone, head coach Doug Berry said Smith better be prepared for Thursday night's game.

"He's got two days to get ready and show us what he can do," said Berry.

DO THE SHUFFLE: Two of the biggest question marks remaining on defence are weak-side linebacker and safety. That's why the coaching staff shuffled players at both positions yesterday.

Shawn Gallant and Donnavan Carter, who had been at safety, are now taking reps at linebacker, while Ron Ockimey and Robert Grant, who had been at linebacker, are now taking reps at safety.

Those moves likely suggest Gallant and Carter are out of the running at safety and the team will be looking to put an American there, although that could cause problems with the ratio.

GM Brendan Taman said you can't count out Ian Logan, who missed Friday's pre-season opener due to injury.

Logan, a non-import rookie straight out of Wilfred Laurier University, will get a long look at safety on Thursday against the Als.

It's believed Donny Green and Ockimey are leading the pack at the linebacker spot, which almost certainly would have been occupied by Kyries Hebert had he reported to camp.

LATE HITS: OL Obby Khan, OL Val St. Germain and DT Cam Legault, who missed Friday's game due to injury, were back on the practice field yesterday ...
