Kicker experiences windy 'Peg

KIRK PENTON -- Winnipeg Sun

Between walking over from Canad Inns Polo Park and stepping onto the field at Canad Inns Stadium, Kirk Yliniemi got a quick lesson in Canadian weather.

It was 23 C, sunny and relatively calm when the import placekicker walked out of the hotel.

It was 15 C, raining and the wind was gusting to 79 km/h -- in his face -- when he was lining up a field goal attempt at the Stadium an hour and a half later.

"That was fun," said Yliniemi.

The good news for the 25-year-old, who is battling Troy Westwood for the placekicking duties, is he connected on three of his five field goal attempts from 33 yards.

"I kind of had the same thing when I lived in Houston and Oklahoma," said Yliniemi. "The weather would move in pretty fast on you. And I spent the last two training camps with the (San Francisco) 49ers, so you get a lot of wind off the bay. It doesn't gust like it does here, but it's a really consistent wind.

"I made three out of five field goals -- not too bad for my first time really kicking into that windy end."

CUT SHORT: The Bombers were supposed to be on the field for 90 minutes yesterday, but they evacuated when lightning struck nearby 35 minutes into the workout.

Head coach Doug Berry wasn't concerned with Day 8 of training camp being cut short after seven straight two-a-days.

"We only lost five minutes of blitz and five minutes of another team period," said Berry.

The team then headed to the Blue and Gold Room, where they did some walk-throughs for another hour.

"It was good to go in," said Berry. "We had better attention being inside, away from the strong winds and things that were outside."

The players also got to rest their weary bodies.

LATE HITS: Berry said if he had to draw up his roster today, he would start four imports and one non-import at receiver ... The coach also said the battles for both outside linebacker spots remain wide open ... The Bombers will have two practices today, tomorrow and Wednesday in preparation for Friday's exhibition home game against Montreal. The start time for this week's workouts has been moved back half an hour to 8:30 a.m.
