The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced the re-signing of import offensive tackle Jermese Jones yesterday.

At the same time, they also sent a subtle message to Dan Goodspeed.

"With the pending retirement of Dan Goodspeed, I'm very excited to add Jermese," Bombers GM Brendan Taman said yesterday with more than a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

Goodspeed's agent, Ron Del Duca Jr., contacted the Sun on Wednesday to complain about contract renegotiations between the Bombers and his client, who is also an import tackle.

Might retire

Del Duca said Goodspeed, who's entering his option year, might retire or ask for a trade if the Bombers aren't willing to go higher than their current offer of $75,000 plus incentives.

The 6-foot-5, 337-pound Jones is entering his fourth year with the Bombers. He broke his hand in the first game last season, and he ended up starting six games.

His new contract is for one year plus an option, and the Bombers would have no problem starting him.

"He's a guy that you probably don't notice a lot, which is probably not a bad thing as an offensive tackle," Taman said.

"He's very steady, very consistent and a good team person."
