Rat rule atrocious, says Westwood

Troy Westwood has been called a lot of things, but don't call him a rat.

The Blue Bomber kicker says a "whistle-blower" provision in the CFL's new salary system, encouraging players to fink on teams that cheat, is ridiculous.

"Pay players to rat on their own teams? Good luck with that," Westwood said from Toronto yesterday. "That's atrocious. Any man worth his salt is not going to rat on an organization that helped him put food on his family's table."

The suggestion that retired players could report violations that took place when they played -- made by Calgary owner Ted Hellard -- didn't impress the outspoken kicker, either.

"After they retire, now they're going to turn an organization in for breaking salary cap rules? It's up to the league to figure out a way to enforce the rules they put in place, instead of depending on players to rat on their own organizations."
