Hunt for coach 'right on track': Taman

There are rumblings in Saskatchewan that the axe could fall on Roughriders GM Roy Shivers and head coach Danny Barrett.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM Brendan Taman, who, coincidentally, is currently searching for a new head coach in place of the fired Jim Daley, wouldn't say if Barrett is on his radar screen.

"He's the opposition right now. We hope to do better against him next year," is all Taman would say.

Meanwhile, Taman was cryptic when asked if he had talked to Calgary Stampeder co-ordinators Steve Buratto and Denny Creehan.

"We will be contacting them, put it that way ... if we haven't already," he said. "I'm sure I'll be talking to both of them fairly soon."

Taman hasn't interviewed any of the 20 applicants yet, and he doesn't plan on doing so this weekend. He'll watch CIS semifinal action today and then take in the CFL division finals tomorrow.

He plans to begin the interview process next week, but before he heads to Vancouver for the Grey Cup.

"I'll probably start making some phone calls on Monday, talking to some people," he said. "I've talked to some people already, but it's a feeling-out process."

Taman isn't concerned that he might end up swimming with other CFL teams in the head coaching pool should more openings pop up.

"We've had a plan all along on how we're going to do it, and we're sticking right to it, no matter if there's one job or three or four," he said. "Obviously it makes the dominos a little more prevalent, but I don't really want to deal in hypotheticals until things happen."

In addition, some potential candidates, like Toronto Argonaut co-ordinators Kent Austin and Rich Stubler, are still in the playoffs.

"We're right on track," Taman said.
