It's currently a three-horse race for Bombers head coaching job.

Former Ottawa Renegades defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall left a message for Bomber GM Brendan Taman on Wednesday.

The agent for former Renegades head coach Joe Paopao talked to Taman yesterday.

And the third candidate?

"A guy from Portage called me today," Taman said with a chuckle. "He's got some work to do to get in the race."

OK, so maybe Marshall and Paopao have better resumes than the dreamer from Portage, but Taman will still spend this weekend trying to compile as many names as he can.

"Most of the candidates are still playing," he said. "It'll filter in here pretty soon."

Taman is basically a rookie when it comes to finding a new head coach. Dave Ritchie and Taman arrived in Winnipeg together in 1999, and Jim Daley, who was fired on Tuesday, was hired from within.

"I thought the process was going to be hard, but holy (cow), it's quite alarming when you get into everything," he said.

Therefore, Taman is calling the people he trusts in the business to give him some guidance.

'Making those calls'

"When you talk to people that I'm going to talk to, they might give you a name you might not even think of or thought would even be interested," Taman said. "So that's why I'm making those kind of calls, just to certain guys I know and respect."

Taman will spend the weekend compiling a list of questions he plans to ask candidates and a list of answers he wants to hear.

One of his most important queries will be: Who would be on your staff?

"That'll be a big factor," Taman said. "That's one of my most important criteria from talking to some guys who have been through this before. That's a constant message I'm getting."
