Stegall a Roughrider? Sure, for half the team

The rumour out of Regina is that the Saskatchewan Roughriders are ready to make a trade offer for Winnipeg Blue Bombers slotback Milt Stegall.

If that's the case, Winnipeg GM Brendan Taman is ready to deal.

"I'll take half their team and a couple wins," Taman joked.

In other words, don't expect to see the CFL's all-time leader in touchdown receptions leaving any time soon.

"No, we're not in a hurry to trade Milt Stegall," Taman said.

The real question, however, is this: Does Taman start dealing veteran talent in an effort to get his ducks in a row for 2006, when Winnipeg will host the Grey Cup?

"There's a chance, (but) not this week," he said. "... Anything we're gonna do is not going to be a proven guy for a future this or a future that. If we can improve our team now or in the future, we will do it.

"But ... we're not going to trade, for example, Keith Stokes for a what-if."

REMPEL OUT: Bombers non-import WR Chad Rempel will miss the rest of the season due to a detached retina.

The 24-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., had surgery on Sunday and faces more operations, but he is expected to be ready for training camp next May.

The former University of Saskatchewan Huskies star joined the Bombers in early July and appeared in nine games as a backup receiver and special teams player.

SPECIAL TEAMS

"He's a rookie who was having a great year for us on special teams," Bombers head coach Jim Daley said.

"... It's a real unfortunate thing. Luckily our medical people caught it right away and were able to treat it right away."

The retina wasn't detached because of a blow during Saturday's game; it apparently had been gradually detaching over his entire life without Rempel realizing it.

The Bombers brought back training camp cut Patrick Thibeault yesterday, but RB/WR Graeme Bell is expected to take Rempel's roster spot on Friday in Ottawa against the Renegades.

LATE HITS: WR Chris Brazzell missed yesterday's practice because he went home to tend to a personal matter. He might miss today's practice as well ... DT Doug Brown (foot), CB Omar Evans (neck) and DB Justin Coleman (foot, ribs) all practised yesterday, but they all remain questionable for Friday ... S Shawn Gallant (viral infection) didn't practise yesterday. If he can't go Friday, Thibeault would likely take his roster spot.
