Ex-Roughrider Hall after bit of 'payback'

The former Saskatchewan Roughrider had some friendly advice for his ex-teammates: keep your heads up.

"You know I've got to get some licks in, get up, talk trash and be flashy," Santino Hall, a last-minute addition to Winnipeg's secondary, said yesterday.

Hall will play the dime, essentially replacing injured defensive back Justin Coleman (ribs) on the roster when the Blue Bombers host Saskatchewan tonight.

"It's a big game," said Hall, released by Saskatchewan last month. "It's the team that let me go so I feel like I've got to come in here and outshine them guys and show them what they let go, what they're missing -- a little payback."

DB SHUFFLE: Syniker Taylor, another new arrival, will start at DB, replacing injured CB Omar Evans (neck) on the roster with Brad Franklin shifting to corner. LB Ron Ockimey returns, replacing SB Darnell McDonald, while OL Mike Abou-Mechrek is back, replacing OL Corey Annett on the roster.

Backup S John Sullivan will also make his CFL debut, replacing injured DB Boyd Barrett (toe).

"It's definitely been a long wait," said the 6-foot-1, 197-pound Sullivan. "I've been on the practice roster here all year and just working hard, waiting for my opportunity to come."

'RIDER CHANGES: Veteran Saskatchewan DL Nate Davis, LB Jackie Mitchell and DB Davin Bush return from injury tonight, replacing DL Marcus Adams, LB Lamar Lee and DB Rontarius Robinson, respectively. Ex-Bomber OL Rob Lazeo will start in place of injured OL Andrew Greene (triceps) with backup OL Mark O'Meara drawing in.

LUSTRE LOST: Troy Westwood, whose tongue-in-cheek insults led to the creation of the Banjo Bowl, was asked if its lustre had been lost due to Winnipeg's poor record this season.

"Maybe it's just because the two teams are struggling a little bit that there's not some yapping back and forth like maybe there could be," said the Winnipeg placekicker. "But I'm sure it will return somewhere in the future."

'Riders head coach Danny Barrett, however, still doesn't like the name.

"It's something that was given the wrong moniker from the start because one of these days, Westwood's going to be out of the game and what are you going to do then? Still give him credit for something?" Barrett asked. "I like the fact it's two rival teams going back-to-back just like you have the Battle of Alberta. Why can't we have the Prairie Bowl or something like that?"

Hey, try the Humourless Dust Bowl.

RYLAND RANKLED: Bombers LB Ryland Wickman is still rankled that Saskatchewan RB Kenton Keith ran for 170 yards on only 17 carries versus Winnipeg last week.

"I don't like it when people run the ball on us and they usually don't," he said. "Last week was a horrible performance by us linebackers, by our defence really, and we just need to come out and play better.

"We're going to line up right, play a lot better and get some good shots on Kenton Keith."

But it's not the first time that Keith has created nightmares for a Winnipeg defence.

"Yeah, I've had great games against the Blue Bombers," he said. "But it's not like it's a routine thing. I've had great games against everybody at least once."
