First-and-goal play right call, says QB Glenn

REGINA -- Many observers were wondering just what the heck was going on.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers trailed the Saskatchewan Roughriders 7-0 in the second quarter Sunday night at Taylor Field, and they were first-and-goal from the three-yard line.

Running back Charles Roberts got to the one-yard line on the first play, but fullback Wade Miller, who hadn't carried the ball all season, got the ball on the second attempt.

He failed to get in the end zone, but Saskatchewan was flagged for offside. On the next play, Roberts gained no ground.

Then, with fullback Scott Regimbald still standing on the sideline, quarterback Kevin Glenn dropped back and threw a pass to Milt Stegall that LaDouphyous McCalla intercepted.

"It was the right play," Glenn said. "I think I got pressured on it or something. I don't know exactly what happened up front, but I kind of got pressured on the throw, and it was just a miscue by the offence.

"... If I could have had one back, that would probably be the one."

The closest the Bombers got to the Roughriders the rest of the way was two points on two occasions in the third quarter of their 45-26 loss.

NEW FACES? Bombers GM Brendan Taman said there will be some player shuffling this week in the wake of the team's latest loss.

The secondary is an obvious target for change, and Taman said former Renegades DB George McCullough is a possibility.

"Anybody who has CFL experience in this league is an option," he said. "I would prefer to have guys with CFL experience (over an NFL cut)."

LATE HITS: Winnipeg's Keith Stokes had a grand total of one yard on seven punt returns ... Bombers SB Milt Stegall, who became the CFL's all-time leader in touchdown receptions Sunday, has scored a major in seven straight games and has nine overall during that span ... Jim Daley said last night that he will get Ron Ockimey into the lineup for Saturday's game. Doug Brown (foot), Mike Abou-Mechrek (headaches) and Boyd Barrett (toe) are questionable, while Justin Coleman (ribs) is expected to play.
