O-line shore-up still work-in-progress

Who's next?

First, Dave Mudge lost his starting tackle job on the Blue Bombers offensive line, then got traded to Montreal. But not before he filled in for Dan Gyetvai, who got the hook only eight plays into Thursday's game against Calgary. Previously, Gyetvai had been lauded as the answer to holdout Orlando Bobo.

But either Aaron Fiacconi, who was acquired from Montreal, or centre Matt Sheridan, will likely start at left guard when the Bombers play the Eskimos in Edmonton on Friday.

"Dan (Gyetvai) is a guy who can play guard and tackle for us so he gives us the depth to do that," Bombers head coach Jim Daley said yesterday.

The Bombers also had a centre/guard already here in Cory Annett so that could leave his status in limbo.

"Cory plays centre and guard so we have two guys who can provide great depth for our O-line," Daley suggested.

If Fiacconi can learn the system quickly enough, the Bombers could start three new O-linemen in Edmonton.

"This will be two new tackles (John Feugill and Dan Goodspeed) and a new guard in the last eight days," Daley said. "That's never good. Hopefully, it will pay dividends in the very near future and beyond."

HURTING: Bombers DB Tim Carter will likely accept a move to the practice roster today but could return to the lineup as soon as Friday, depending on the foot sprain suffered by DB Justin Coleman, Daley said ... the Bombers will also be keeping a close eye on the ankle that KR Keith Stokes sprained.

BLOCKED KICKS: Bombers P Jon Ryan had his third punt of the season blocked by Calgary last week in only his third game.

"It was just a missed assignment, I guess," he said. "You don't want to point fingers or anything but it's something that we're going to have to look at on the game film and correct."

Although Ryan was knocked for his slow, deliberate style last year, he could not be faulted for the blocks this season.

"That was kind of a knock against me last year," he conceded. "So it's something that I worked real hard on in the off-season to correct, and I think that I have corrected it. So it's kind of discouraging to have three blocked punts in three games. But on the game film, it seems to be getting out of there quick enough."
