High hopes for new receiver

Of course you wonder why a club would believe a Canadian receiver -- who could not make it elsewhere -- might help.

However, Winnipeg Blue Bomber GM Brendan Taman has the answer. He figures only a spate of injuries has slowed Chad Rempel's progress as a professional.

"He's had some injury problems that didn't allow his career to flourish," Taman said yesterday. "He was out catching balls from (Saskatchewan quarterback) Nealon Greene when he fell into a gopher hole and suffered an Achilles problem. He also hurt his jaw in college.

"He's a gifted receiver with good size (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) and has good hands."

Taman placed Rempel on the club's neg list after a failed tryout in Edmonton last season but the University of Saskatchewan product went to Hamilton's training camp this year when the Bombers had a plethora of Canuck pass-catchers coming to camp. That, however, dwindled when Geoff Drover failed his medical, Gilles Colon suffered a broken hand and Patrick Thibeault failed to make it. And when Jamie Stoddard was finally given back his starting job, Taman sent for Rempel to back up the receivers, starting this Thursday when the Calgary Stampeders come to town.

Although Rempel, 26, now lives in Saskatoon, he was visiting his family in Edmonton when Taman called.

"It was a long drive from there -- 15 hours -- but an exciting one, definitely," he said. "So, I'm just glad to be here right now.

"I knew I'd get another chance. I knew there was a good chance that Hamilton would bring me back to camp next year but obviously, I was looking for an opportunity to play this year. I was just looking to be in the right place at the right time kind of thing."

HASHMARKS: QB Kevin Glenn (high ankle sprain) was throwing footballs again yesterday but says he still feels twinges when he moves the ankle the wrong way ... Although OL Jermese Jones (broken hand) is determined to play, expect either Dan Goodspeed or John Feugill to replace him ... To make room for the four newcomers, Taman must delete two more players ... Word out of Calgary is that rookie Godfrey Ellis will replace injured tackle Alexandre Gauthier (separated shoulder).

LAST WORD: Taman was asked when Winnipeg planned a Mardi Gras Madness like Ottawa's.

"We've got our own version of Mardi Gras Madness here right now," he replied.

Yeah, they've only shown flashes that have been all too brief.
