A familiar note

Ryan Bachman is takin' care of business, he's lookin' out for No. 1, and he's hoping to roll on down the highway with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

How's that for cheesy?

Don't worry. Bachman has heard them all.

It doesn't help that his dad's name is actually Randy Bachman, whose namesake is familiar around these parts for his rock band, Bachman Turner Overdrive.

"The first day I got here they were kind of messing with me a little bit, and that's when I told them my dad's first name actually was Randy," the offensive lineman said yesterday. "I don't know if they believe me or not, but it actually is Randy."

It didn't take a career stop in Manitoba for Bachman to be teased about his name, either.

"Throughout college and even in my short stint in some NFL camps, BTO is what they called me," he said. "So I got used to it."

He has yet to hear it through the first week of Bomber camp, however.

"I haven't heard BTO yet, so I've been keeping my mouth shut, and I'm just kind of seeing what happens," Bachman said.

On the football side of things, the 6-foot-6, 300-pounder out of the University of Nebraska-Kearney was at left guard yesterday on an O-line unit that included Jermese Jones, Matt Sheridan, Mike Abou-Mechrek and Dave Mudge.

Those four are front-runners for starting spots, so Bachman is taking his inclusion as a good sign.

"The way I look at it right now is ... nothing's set in stone, but I'm there right now, and I gotta fight to keep that spot," he said. "If I start pulling back the reins, then somebody can sneak in there and maybe take my spot."
