Kickers' flex appeal

Jim Daley says the top-two conditioned athletes in Winnipeg Blue Bombers training camp are punter Jon Ryan and placekicker Troy Westwood.

Vince Lombardi just rolled over in his grave.

Ryan beefed up in the off-season, following a strict diet and lifting weights that pushed his 6-foot frame to 214 pounds from 192. He also ensured that he didn't lose any flexibility.

"So far I feel pretty good out there," the sophomore pro said. "After the first couple of days I feel a lot more power, a little more distance."

Ryan, a Regina native who spent most of the winter in Oregon, had to keep a close eye on his diet, but he didn't go hungry.

"I didn't miss anything," he said. "Once you get used to eating chicken and salmon and tuna every day, you kinda get used to it.

"It wasn't too bad. As long as you keep your belly full, you're OK."

BUCK BIDS ADIEU: DT Buck Rasmussen, who was brought in as a last-minute replacement for Melvin Bradley, left camp yesterday citing sore knees as the reason.

"His knees were bothering him from his NFL playing time, and he thought they were OK," Daley said.

"He couldn't run the way he needs to run."

It's not all bad for Rasmussen. He will be at New England owner Robert Kraft's house on June 12 to collect the Super Bowl ring he won with the Patriots in February.

Bombers GM Brendan Taman said he had irons in the fire, but he wasn't ready to announce Rasmussen's replacement late yesterday afternoon.

Taman added Bradley is not an option.

COBWEBS CLEARED: OL Matt Sheridan (concussion) will be back on the practice field today in full pads after a doctor cleared him to resume workouts.

"I'm jumping through the hoops," said Sheridan, who took part in yesterday's practice without pads. "Obviously there's a little bit of precaution when you're dealing with neurological trauma."

DON'T GO THERE: Daley was asked yesterday what he thought about Bernie and Lonie Glieberman taking ownership of the Ottawa Renegades, but he didn't bite.

"You know that experience," Daley said. "I'm not going to comment on anything, other than to wish them luck."

Daley and Mike Roach resigned from the Rough Riders coaching staff in 1992 when the Gliebermans signed former NFL star and repeat drug offender Dexter Manley and insisted he start.

LATE HITS: The Bombers will conduct a Blue and White scrimmage on Sunday morning at 10:30 ... Taman talked to QBs Kevin Glenn, Spergon Wynn and Tee Martin yesterday about their contracts. "The guys going into their option years (Wynn and Martin) are always a concern," Taman said. "I am confident Spergon and Tee will get done -- and soon." ... Daley plans to take a boatload of players to next Friday's exhibition game in Edmonton, and most will be starters or players fighting for starting spots. All four quarterbacks -- Glenn, Martin, Wynn and Russ Michna -- will play ... Taman said there was nothing new yesterday with DB Ricky Bell or OL Orlando Bobo, who both retired prior to camp after requesting raises ... The Calgary Stampeders have signed former Bombers LB Sebastien Roy.
