Wick likely to stick with Blue

It appears the Winnipeg Blue Bomber linebacking corps will remain intact from last year -- at least into training camp.

Free-agent veteran Ryland Wickman could re-sign with the CFL club as early as today.

"We should be getting pretty close," Wickman said yesterday. "I'm meeting (today) with (GM) Brendan (Taman) and hopefully we can get something done."

Wickman, Lamar McGriggs and Maurice Kelly started the bulk of last season.

But with Travis Ortega back for a second year, and head coach Jim Daley still in the hunt for more talent at linebacker, that position could still see some changes.

"We will turn our attention to linebacker," Daley said. "We will bring in linebackers to compete with our three returning starters."

Daley's wish list also still includes a few more defensive backs, a defensive end, an import running back as insurance for Charles Roberts and a quarterback to compete for the No. 3 spot.

Veteran Elfrid Payton, just four sacks from the CFL's career record, remains a possibility on the defensive line.

TOUGH LOSS: Daley says he'll miss Winnipeg-born receiver Markus Howell, poised to sign a free-agent deal with the Ottawa Renegades.

"Markus was a guy I liked as a receiver and as a football player and as a man," Daley said. "He's a good person."

At the same time, the Bomber boss says the team has improved dramatically at receiver this winter, with the signing of Wayne McGarity, Dimitrius Breedlove and Vinny Sutherland.

"Those three bring tremendous talent to our receiving corps," Daley said. "That was a priority."

LANDING ON HIS FEET: Former Bomber O-lineman Miles Gorrell has landed a part-time gig with the Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts. Let go as Calgary's director of Canadian personnel in the Stampeders' ownership change, Gorrell will help the Argos prepare for the Canadian college draft next month ... Mike Sellers, the former Bomber fullback, re-signed with the Washington Redskins yesterday. A backup, Sellers was second on the team in special teams tackles last year.
