Howell, Wickman most attractive Bombers

All Markus Howell wants is a full-time job and a slight raise.

Whether the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will give it to the wide receiver, who doubled as a cornerback last season, remains to be seen.

Howell, a Winnipeg native, and linebacker Ryland Wickman, who both have spent the past five seasons in Blue and Gold, are the two biggest names among the remaining nine Bombers who will become free agents tonight.

Howell has heard rumblings throughout the league that his services are wanted as either a receiver, cornerback or safety. As of yesterday afternoon, he had yet to hear from Bombers general manager Brendan Taman, but the club said earlier this spring that it was going to let Howell and Wickman go free.

Howell got lost in the shuffle last year when the Bombers signed Kamau Peterson, and he ended up playing cornerback.

Howell still believes he deserves to be a pass catcher.

"Jamie (Stoddard) is a great receiver and he deserves to play. If there's anybody I have to sit behind, it would have to be Jamie," Howell said. "But Kamau, he's a great athlete and everything, but shoot, he's dropped more balls than Jamie and I put together.

"I'm not knocking him. I'm just saying if that's what you're going to come to the negotiating table with, then let's be real."
