Daley choices boil down to one

Jim Daley, it seems, is getting awfully close to settling on his offensive co-ordinator simply by process of elimination.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach had interviewed B.C. Lions assistant Steve Buratto, Ottawa Renegades head coach Joe Paopao, former Calgary Stampeders head man Jim Barker and current assistant Ron Lancaster Jr., for the position.

But reports are that Paopao will remain in Ottawa and Barker will return to Calgary once the new ownership is in place, and Lancaster has been interviewed for the offensive co-ordinator job with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Unless there are other names in the works, that leaves Buratto.

"I talked to Jim (Wednesday) night," Buratto said from his White Rock, B.C., home yesterday. "He didn't say much but he's kind of waiting on me because I've got a couple of other things on the go outside of football that would be a good opportunity for me. But I told Jim I wouldn't keep him hanging for long."

Daley, who is reluctant to discuss those he has interviewed anyway, could not be reached for comment.

"If things don't work out for me, I really do enjoy coaching," Buratto said. "And the Bombers always have what it takes to get back on track. They're not that far away."

It was also suggested that he could bring either Dave Dickenson or Casey Printers with him.

"Sure, I'd love to bring Casey or Dave with me," he said. "Or even one of the other guys. We had four pretty good quarterbacks out here last year."

Lancaster, by the way, was also unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, the other Bomber assistants are anxiously awaiting their fate.

"I'm just waiting to hear from Jim," defensive line/special teams coach Urban Bowman said from his Northern Ontario home. "I'd love to come back. I like to coach football. It's like breathing and there's no place I'd rather be than the 'Peg."

Bowman answered an SOS from the Bombers after Daley replaced Dave Ritchie as head coach. Others believed to be in the running for assistant positions include Mike Roach, Dave Easley and Scott Fawcett.

Daley has said he wants his coaching staff in place by early February.
