Sox tickle Joe

WINNIPEG -- For Joe Fleming, the misery finally ended Wednesday night.

The long-suffering Boston Red Sox fan finally had reason to celebrate as baseball's perrenial losers managed to shake a near-century long curse.

So, did the newest member of the Blue Bombers tear up the streets of Winnipeg? Maybe pop some bubbly and shut down one of the city's sports pubs?

Not exactly.

"I went to bed with two black labs and Scott Regimbald."

OK ...

"We sat in the hotel room and watched the game," he said of his pets, Bolt and Daley, and Blue Bombers teammate. "It was rather anti-climactic. But it was unbelievable. It was uncharted waters for a Red Sox fan."

The 2003 CFL defensive player of the year still has football on his mind. One last game against his former team.

"For me, it's always business as usual," said the 32-year-old, who is in his second tour of duty with the Bombers.

"I try to approach every game, over 10 years, the same way. I want to be consistent in my approach and that hasn't changed this week."

The eight-year veteran will become a free agent this off-season but hasn't decided where he'll be playing in 2005.

"I haven't given it a thought. We were in the middle of a playoff run so I would never do my teammates or the organization the slight of thinking about selfish things. And I won't now. That lovely 2,000-mile cross-country drive to Boston will give me ample time to figure out my future.

"I definitely want to play and I feel I have a lot of good football ahead of me right now."

Regimbald, who was dealt by Calgary to the Bombers last month along with Fleming and Wes Lysack, will also be free to sign with the highest bidder. He's waiting until the season is officially over before deciding his next move.

"It's something that's up in the air right now," Regimbald said. "When I get home, I'll sit down and think about it. Any time you're able to become a free agent and test those waters, it's a positive for any player."
