Howell returns from 'secret mission'

Mr. Versatility has gone from offence to defence and now, back to offence.

And that just might get Markus Howell back on the roster when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play the Lions in B.C.

Receiver Kamau Peterson rested a sore knee at practice all week. He will test it this morning. But if he can't go, then rookie receiver Gilles Colon will start, with Howell as the backup.

"But Markus looked good (at receiver)," Winnipeg head coach Jim Daley said yesterday.

"I'm an athlete, man," said Howell, who can also return kicks. "I can play both sides of the ball and that's considered value. Defence, I learned a lot, like I was on a secret mission. I took a lot of information and took it back to offence."

Howell was forced to sit out with a broken bone in his right hand but has made a quick recovery. He would play with a little sponge and a pad over it.

"It's just a little pain you've got to deal with but it's part of football," said the Winnipeg lad. "I'm good to go."

CH-CHANGES: Defensive lineman Joe Fleming will replace Melvin Bradley on the roster while safety Wes Lysack takes over from Joe Morgan (shoulder). However, Geoff Drover may still start at safety. Daley hasn't decided how to get fullback Scott Regimbald in the lineup.

Defensive back Jayson Bray (groin) may also return to action this week, Daley said. Bray got a lot of work yesterday, mostly at the expense of Stephen Fisher.

TUT-TUT: Daley stopped yesterday's practice to reprimand his troops because he was unhappy with their effort. However, he did not yell or scream, just laid it on the line.

"I told our guys that this is not the quality of practice that we want," he said. "We had just come off a (poor) period at one end that was not the best quality. Then we started O-team and we had a defensive offside and an offensive procedure, and we had to repeat a play -- all within two plays. So I just stopped and said we're going to do it over and at the quality that I expect.

"Yeah, it got better. Sometimes, you just have to shake things up a bit."

NUMBERS GAME: DB Cedric Dickerson was wearing his third different number (37) at practice yesterday as Lysack bought his 31.

"Cedric has made a lot of money," Daley said. "He sold his twice."

Earlier, Dickerson was wearing No. 13, which was sold QB Tee Martin earlier. Martin, by the way, has moved into the locker stall vacated by Khari Jones after the QB got traded. Martin's number in college? 17.

HASHMARKS: WR Derrick Smith (hand) has not practised this week but will practise today ... Although DB Markese Fitzgerald was hurt toward the end of practice, Daley believes he is OK ... WR Reggie Jones has left the team.
