Michael Clemons became Pinball. Henry Williams, The Gizmo. In the CFL, you know you've arrived when you get your own nickname. It's the league that brought us Jackie "Spaghetti Legs" Parker, "Neon" Leon Bright and James "Quick" Parker. How about Joe "747" Adams, Jimmy "The Jet" Cunningham, or Ron "The Little General" Lancaster?
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers aren't without their own rich history of colourful nicknames, from Leo Lewis, also known as the Lincoln Locomotive, to "Mini" Mack Herron to Willard "The Sheriff" Reaves and today's fan favourite, Charles "Blink" Roberts.
We at The Sun believe it's time to recognize the exploits of first-year Bomber Keith Stokes, by finding him a name that reflects his uncanny ability to turn routine-looking kick returns into highlight-reel touchdowns.
And we want help from you, our readers.
Stokes has three punt return touchdowns this season, seven for his career -- but it was his 108-yard kickoff return on the last play of the first half against Toronto last week that pushed him into superstar territory in our books.
Including kickoff returns, it was the 10th return touchdown of his three-year CFL career -- and he's only 25. Who knows, maybe he'll challenge Gizmo's all-time record of 26 punt return touchdowns by the time he's done.
Incredibly, this 5-foot-8, 180-pound dynamo says he never had a nickname in high school or college. And he's not about to suggest one himself.
"You can't make up your own nickname," Stokes explained. "It's part of the unwritten rule book. Somebody's gotta give it to you."
We snooped around the Bomber locker-room for some ideas, but didn't come up with much.
"I haven't thought about it," O-lineman Orlando Bobo began. "He does need one, 'cause all the rest of the guys got one. He's known for his quickness. He has a gift ... to be able to make guys miss and still get upfield. That's a special gift. I guess you could call him the "Elusive Stokeman."
Interesting, but a little clumsy.
"How about jack rabbit, or antelope?" receiver Kamau Peterson offered.
Fitting, although not all that colourful.
Receiver Milt Stegall already has another name for Stokes. Stegall dubbed him "Geoffrey" back in training camp.
"You ever watch the Fresh Prince of Belair? You ever see the butler, Geoffrey? He looks just like him," Stegall said. "That's what we call him -- Geoffrey the Fresh Prince. That sounds like a quick guy."
It does?
One suggestion from The Sun sports department was "Slingshot."
But we're sure you, our faithful reader, can do better than that.
Some background: Stokes, who wears No. 3, was born in Toms River, N.J., and played college ball for the East Carolina Pirates. His dad is a car salesman, his mom a preacher.
He's a multi-dimensional threat, also lining up as a receiver and running back.
So dust off the dictionaries and get to work.
Send your suggestions to the e-mail address below.
We'll take them to Stokes for his approval, and, who knows, maybe it'll wind up being another Gizmo or Pinball.
"If you all come up with one, I guess that will be it," Stokes said. "If it sticks. If they find one for me, and it fits, let it go."
