Out of football for two years, Matt Ware was poised to become a fire fighter when the itch to return to the gridiron began.

And so it would begin, Ware’s improbable road back to football, a path that would involve a stop in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, a drive to his native California and a plea by a sports agent, whom Ware was working with as a personal trainer, to check an e-mail.

“I was training clients for this agent when he asked me if I still wanted to play,’’ said Ware, a defensive back. “I said yeah. I’m still in great shape. I can still play. When I came back from Vegas, he told me to check my e-mail.

“I was tired of driving. I’m like: ‘For what?’ He’s like: ‘Just check your e-mail.’ I check it and bam, there’s a one-year contract with an option. I almost had to pull over. Wow! Toronto!"
