TORONTO - For a can’t-miss kid, Anthony Coombs was caught off guard when he missed an incoming call during Tuesday night’s CFL draft process, an evening of trades, player movement and unexpected drama.

As a native of the Peg, Coombs thought his hometown Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who will be guided by rookie head coach Mike O’Shea this season, would express an interest.

When Winnipeg went in a different direction with the evening’s second overall pick, it appeared a slam dunk Coombs would go to Edmonton, which held the third overall pick.

“Edmonton showed a lot of interest,’’ said Coombs in the weeks and months leading up to draft night.

As soon as the Blue Bombers made their selection, there was a phone call, one Coombs failed to answer.

“When I did see it, there was an Ontario number. When I saw how Toronto was on the (TV) screen with the third pick, we were all shocked. What a great feeling.”
