Jermaine Gabriel has taken his share of life’s hard knocks.

Seems only fair he should now get a chance to hand back a few on the football field.

Toronto’s second-round selection in this year’s draft travelled coast to coast to keep his football dream, not to mention his family, alive and well.

He went to McGill University, then for two seasons he played at Bishops, quit to find work to help support his single mother and sister back home in Scarborough, ended up working as a janitor, then crossed the country to Calgary to find a better job — and hooked up with a junior league football team.

Anything to keep the dream alive.

Anything to keep food on the family tables.
