When Mike O’Shea took over as special teams co-ordinator, the Argos pushed the envelope on every kickoff, punt return and cover unit.

There were gadget-plays that would lead to big gains, game-changing field position and the occasional touchdown return by Chad Owens, who emerged as the CFL’s measuring stick on special teams.

The Argos haven’t exactly been inferior the last two seasons, but their special teams unit is still missing that special quality that made Toronto special.

On Thursday, the Argos travel to Montreal’s McGill Stadium to play the host Als.

The Argos have experienced more misery than victory on the university campus, but it is the venue where Owens last produced a return touchdown during the regular season.

Back in Week 15 of the 2012 season, O’Shea’s second as an Argos assistant, Owens fielded a punt at midfield, somehow eluded a cadre of Als defenders and bolted into the end zone.
