Chad Owens recorded a win in his MMA debut Saturday in Honolulu.

The Toronto Argonauts wide receiver and CFL’s Most Outstanding Player earned a unanimous decision against Junyah Tefaga at Destiny MMA: Na Koa III. Both men made their MMA debut as amateurs and fought two three-minute rounds at the Blaisdell Arena.

Owens, 31, pummelled Tefaga with ground and pound in the second round that left him bloodied by the end of the fight.

“I had fun and the crowd brought so much energy,” Owens said in the Honolulu Star Advertiser. “One of the things I was looking forward to was I get to focus on one guy and try to let my athleticism take over. I do have a newfound respect for the sport. When I was done, I couldn’t breathe because the adrenaline was unreal.”

The Argos can breathe a sigh of relief as Owens came out of the bout without being injured. The team, while not thrilled with the star’s decision to fight, could not contractually prevent him from doing so.
