Argonauts release kicker Noel Prefontaine
By BILL LANKHOF, QMI Agency
TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts are starting to feel the cost of winning a Grey Cup.
Tuesday that cost made Noel Prefontaine a free agent and looking for a new football home.
“When you win a Grey Cup everyone wants more money,” general manager Jim Barker said as the club officially announced that it was releasing Prefontaine after 10 seasons as an Argonaut.
The move comes just weeks after Prefontaine helped Toronto beat Calgary in the 100th Grey Cup.
“I definitely want to continue playing,” said Prefontaine. And, maybe he will. Maybe even back in Toronto.
But he will have to take a paycut to do it as Barker juggles to get his team in under the CFL salary cap while trying to resign several other Argonauts who are potentially headed to free agency.
Such is the convoluted reality of life in the CFL.
