TORONTO - In the mind of Jim Barker, there’s not much separating quarterbacks Cleo Lemon and Dalton Bell.

The Argonauts head coach and general manager is hoping that starts to change in the pre-season game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre.

“I’m expecting one of them to step forward,” Barker said after practice on Thursday. “It’s a true competition, and it will be interesting to see how they respond and how the offence responds.

“They are neck and neck. These (two) pre-season games will be important for both of these men and they know it.”

Barker said this week that Lemon and Bell each will get two quarters versus Hamilton, but he has not indicated who will start.

Lemon started 17 of 18 regular-season games in 2010 and both playoff games, but the passing attack never got off the ground. This was after Bell was more effective in training camp.

Fans should not expect to see Chad Owens, who has had cramping and did not practise on Thursday, against the Ticats. QB Steven Jyles, meanwhile, still is not throwing anything that is approaching significance.

The Argos conclude their pre-season with a game on June 23 in Winnipeg against the Blue Bombers.
