TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts have taken the lid off a poorly kept secret, officially hiring Ted Goveia as their director of Canadian scouting.

The announcement on Thursday was just in time for the CFLs annual prospects evaluation camp, but Goveia actually has been with the club for some time.

He has been a head coach in junior football and the CIS, and he knows a lot of these players, Argos general manager/head coach Jim Barker said. Hes the perfect complement to Mike (Hagen, the director of player personnel). Ted knows what it takes for a Canadian player to excel here.

The job had been open since prior to the 2010 season, when Miles Gorrell was let go.

Goveia was an assistant coach with the Argos last season, working with the running backs. Before that, he was the head coach at the University of British Columbia, compiling a 12-20 record in a four-season tenure that ended in 2009, and previously worked for other schools.

Last year was a great learning opportunity for me as a member of the coaching staff, Goveia said. I was able to learn the organizations vision and become familiar with the players. Im thrilled to work closely with the CIS and junior football programs across the country as we continue to build a winning team here.
