TORONTO - Chad Owens likely will dip his toe in the NFL waters.

That’s what Argonauts head coach/general manager Jim Barker told a Calgary radio station Wednesday night.

“He’s going to explore,” Barker told radio station AM 770. “I’m sure there will be some teams that will take a look at him. All we can do is hope that he comes back because he was a big part. He has been down there before and for certain players it takes something special to get them to go.

“Hopefully, before they do something, they get some good advice (in the event of an NFL labour stoppage). Chad has found a home here. Our fans love him and he loves Toronto. It was a great season for him and his family.

“Obviously he has to take a look at opportunities that could be out there.”

Owens was the Argos’ most exciting player in 2010, winning the CFL’s most outstanding special teams player award. Owens led the CFL with 2,701 return yards, nearly 1,000 more than Hamilton’s Marcus Thigpen, who was second with 1,722 return yards.

Clearly, if Owens does not come back, it would be a huge blow to the Argos, who were 9-9 in 2010.
