Belli to get 'hostile'

TORONTO -- Practice on Thursday ended with a motivational speech by none other than Adriano Belli.

It sounded like the Argonauts defensive tackle was speaking through a megaphone, only, as usual, he was not.

"Let's get the guys going," Belli said about the words of wisdom he imparted. "Coaches will come up with Xs and Os, and we have a great game plan, but at the end of the day, it's about showing up on game day and being enthusiastic about ripping somebody's head off."

There was a time when Belli couldn't be trusted to walk the thin line that emotions can bring during games, and dumb penalties often were the result. Although it should be an electric atmosphere at Ivor Wynne Stadium when the Argos and Ticats meet on Sunday in the East Division semifinal, Belli figures on being on good behaviour.

"Heading out to Hamilton, down the QEW, I will be playing my Simon and Garfunkel on the way," the 6-foot-4, 295-pound Belli said. "It's exciting, seeing the Box J boys, all the people yelling at us, all the black and gold; we love playing there. It's a hostile environment, but let's get hostile with their quarterback."

Belli is tight with Ticats centre Marwan Hage, who revealed on Wednesday that Belli plans to sing at his wedding during the off-season. Why would Belli do such a thing to a friend?

"I sang at Danny (McManus') wedding, I sang at Brian Ramsay's wedding," Belli said, referring to a couple of former teammates. "It is beginning to be a CFL tradition."
