TORONTO - Spencer Watt didn’t take long to gain CFL-wide respect.
The Argonauts rookie on Monday was named the league’s Canadian player of the week after his monster performance on Sunday against the Montreal Alouettes.
Watt caught touchdown passes of 50 yards (from Cleo Lemon) and 34 yards (from Dalton Bell) and had a total of 140 yards on six catches as the Argos crunched the Alouettes 30-4. Watt, who became just the second Argos receiver to have more than 100 yards in a game this season, got more reps than usual as the Argos rested several offensive first-stringers, including slotback Jeremaine Copeland.
“Spencer Watt is going to be a great player in this league,” Argos head coach Jim Barker said. “Some guys, it takes a little bit of time and you have to bring rookies along slowly. He was great.”
Might as well start beating the drum for Watt now — he should be considered for more action in the East Division semi-final on Sunday in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats. The Argos receiving corps certainly could use his speed.
The North Vancouver native was the first Canadian receiver to top 100 yards in a game for the Argos since Andre Talbot did it against Saskatchewan on Nov. 3, 2007.
