Elizondo still in charge of Argos 'O'

Jaime Elizondo now has a closer working relationship with his boss, but the Argonauts’ offensive co-ordinator isn’t relinquishing many of his important duties.

Elizondo still will call plays, even as head coach Jim Barker has been more of a guiding hand in the offence this week and will continue to be.

“That’s not going to change,” Elizondo said of his in-game instructions from the sideline.

“Jim has been a little more involved and I have been able to rely on his knowledge. It has been nice to get a perspective from an outside set of eyes.”

What can be forgotten when the Argos offence is dissected is that Elizondo hadn’t been a co-ordinator prior to the 2010 season. As much as quarterback Cleo Lemon and some of the younger receivers are learning on the job, so is Elizondo.

And though many Argos fans have called for the head of Lemon (at least, via e-mail to the Toronto Sun), Elizondo is steadfast in his support of the 31-year-old.

“One of the things that we have been preaching with him is the importance of getting the ball out of your hands quickly,” Elizondo said. “And that’s where some of our struggles have been.

“He is continuing to grow. He is the right quarterback for this team and there is no question about that.

“I expected us to be a little further along, but you never really know. Sometimes it takes two seasons to get that cohesiveness (on offence).”
