Cleo Lemon will start for the Argonauts at quarterback on Saturday in Regina.

But Argos head coach Jim Barker hinted broadly on Thursday after practice that if Lemon can’t move the offence down the field at Mosaic Stadium against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, he will not hesitate to bring in backup Dalton Bell.

The latter made his first Canadian Football League start this past weekend as Lemon recovered from a concussion.

“If (Lemon) struggles, then we have Dalton who has been there and understands Mosaic and the whole deal there,” Barker said. “What Dalton did was he established himself as a guy who our players believe in, and if we are not moving the ball with one quarterback, we can go to the other quarterback. That’s a good situation to be in.”

Bell completed 16 of 24 passes for 153 yards against his former team in a 27-16 Toronto loss. With Lemon running the offence in the previous 12 games, the Argos struggled, and find themselves at the bottom of the CFL in most offensive categories.

Meanwhile, the 2010 season could be done for defensive lineman Adriano Belli, who has not played since suffering a foot injury against the Montreal Alouettes on July 29.

“We’re going to basically put him on the nine-game (injured) list,” Barker said. “He may be done for the year, he may be able to come back in the playoffs, but he was crushed by it. I feel bad for Adriano because nobody wants to play more than Adriano does. It has been difficult on the football team, because every week he has been close. He has to stay off it completely, and get healthy, and when we get to the playoffs make a decision.”

The Argos, who have five games remaining in the regular season, have the option of recalling Belli off the list.
