Copeland must come through

Jeremaine Copeland can be just like Mike O’Shea and Orlondo Steinauer.

Once Copeland’s playing days are done in the CFL, Argonauts head coach Jim Barker sees coaching in Copeland’s future.

“I have two young guys here (in O’Shea, the special teams co-ordinator, and Steinauer, the defensive backs coach) who are doing a marvellous job,” Barker said. “Cope is in that same type of mold. He is a great communicator and a hard worker.”

But what the Argos need now is more production from Copeland, who has just 14 receptions in five games. Last year with the Calgary Stampeders, Copeland had 1,235 yards in receiving and led the CFL with 12 receiving touchdowns.

The 33-year-old has 204 yards and one touchdown for the Argos. Yet for Barker, Copeland’s presence goes beyond the field. “It’s not about him, it’s about how good he can make the guys next to him,” Barker said. “I think he has been enjoying having a quarterback (Cleo Lemon) who is willing to learn. He has been exactly what we needed.”
