MONTREAL — Argonauts offensive tackle Rob Murphy has been fined by the Canadian Football League and the Argos for posting racially insensitive tweets on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

Murphy made a remark about foreigners, and later posted a tweet apologizing for the remark, saying it was made in jest. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon didn’t agree.

“The commissioner found the comments inappropriate and offensive and are not to be tolerated,” the league said in a statement. “The player has been fined by the league under our social media policy.”

One of Murphy’s tweets said: “At train station ... Pumped to be smelling foreigners this early in the AM. They smell less offensive this way ... little known fact.”

The Argos travelled by train to Montreal on Wednesday to get ready for a game on Thursday night against the Alouettes.
