Cleo Lemon will start for the Argonauts at quarterback in their regular season opener on July 1 in Calgary.

Argos head coach Jim Barker confirmed on Tuesday what the Toronto Sun reported — that Lemon had won the job.

This despite better numbers from Dalton Bell during the pre-season.

“It’s the best thing for our organization,” Barker said. “Every decision is made with winning games and going to the Grey Cup in mind.

“Dalton Bell brought us from 24 points down (against Montreal on Saturday) and we know he can come in off the bench and change the tempo of the game.

“Cleo Lemon, from Day 1, has shown the leadership skills.”

Lemon produced no touchdowns in the two pre-season games.

“No concern,” Barker said. “If I thought we weren’t going to score with him, I wouldn’t play him.”

Bell completed 18 of 26 passes for 341 yards in the pre-season and led two touchdown drives. Lemon completed 10 of 26 passes for 99 yards.

Ken Dorsey will be the third-string quarterback.

And Barker confirmed that former CIS star Danny Brannagan will start the season on the practice roster.

Punter/kicker Jamie Boreham practised for the first time on Tuesday after he was cleared physically. Boreham had been out with a herniated disc in his neck.
