The Argonauts released eight players on Sunday afternoon as the deadline for 46-man rosters to be submitted to the CFL nears.

Cut by head coach Jim Barker were four non-imports: linebackers Brad Crawford and Kyle Jones, long-snapper Anthony Lukca and offensive lineman Michael Warner. Imports who were let go included receiver Jason Carter, linebacker Greg Blue, defensive back Ahmaad Smith and defensive tackle Quartez Vickerson.

The mild surprise was the release of Carter, who started in nine games for the Argos last season and was second on the club with 535 receiving yards. But Barker liked the performance in camp of non-import Andre Durie, who will be depended on to catch the ball out of the slotback position. Also, rookie receivers Brandon Rideau and Spencer Watt have impressed.

Barker still has to make a handful of cuts before the deadline for roster submission, on Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Argos finished the pre-season 1-1 and the players will return to practice on Tuesday. The season opener is July 1 in Calgary.
