It is one of those training-camp dramas that is being played out under the radar.

Chris Van Zeyl is quietly putting himself into position to challenge for the starting job as the Argonauts' right tackle.

It is a position that has been owned the past two seasons by Brian Ramsay and might still be if not for a knee injury last season.

"It's exciting for me right now," said Van Zeyl, 26, yesterday. "I don't look at it so much as Ramsay isn't playing and it's my opportunity. I'm still young and new to the position and I'm learning something new every day."

Converted from the defensive line after graduating from McMaster University, Van Zeyl started last year as a backup to Ramsay. But when Ramsay went down, Van Zeyl started the final three games.

Since training camp opened, he has taken most of the reps at right tackle.

"I wasn't sure what was going to happen. You don't expect to get more reps but you want to get more," said Van Zeyl.

"He (Ramsay) still holds a deep place in the heart of this team ... and you never know when he's going to be back."
